Canon(with printhead)

It won't fit

  • Make sure that your printer is turned on, as you cannot replace cartridges if it is off
  • Try closing the printer door and reopening it as sometimes the piece the cartridge fits into does not slide over the first time

I am experiencing error messages

  • Each time the cartridge is removed from the printer an "empty cartridge" message appears and a blinking amber light will start on the printer. Holding down the paper feed or "OK" button will allow you to override this.
  • On MX Series printers you may encounter U161, U162 or E errors. To override these errors hold down the "STOP" button for 15 seconds then continue printing.
  • In printers that take 240/241 cartridges you may get the 5200 error. To clear this error just turn the printer off and then back on.
  • If you encounter a U051 or U052 it means that there is a problem with the chip on one of the cartridges. This error cannot be cleared and you will have to replace the cartridge.

It says that my ink level is empty or unknown

  • This is completely normal as we cannot reset the chips on these particular Canon cartridges.
  • Please see the error message section for steps on how to override

It won't register

  • Remove from the printer and wipe the bronze contacts on the cartridge to make sure that there is no dust/dirt/ink blocking the connection. Once this is complete you can reinstall the cartridge in the printer
  • If the error persists, try repeating the above step again (sometimes it takes a few tries to get it going)

It's streaky/Doesn't print

  • Remove the cartridge from the printer and put a drop of windex on the printhead (the silver piece at the bottom of the cartridge), then rub with a q-tip to unclog any blockage. Next press and drag the printhead accross a paper towel to see if the ink is flowing freely (a solid line should appear on the towel with no spaces)
  • Repeat the above steps if the cartridge does not produce a solid line (badly clogged cartridges can take a few tries)

Canon (without printhead)

It won't fit

  • Make sure that your printer is turned on, as you cannot replace cartridges if it is off
  • Try closing the printer door and reopening it as sometimes the piece the cartridge fits into does not slide over the first time
  • Make sure that the yellow vent tape  or for refilled cartridges that the black tape covering the ink pad has been removed

It won't register

  • Make sure that all tape has been removed from the cartridge
  • Try removing the cartridge from the printer and then replacing it again. Make sure that it clicks into place and is sitting level with the other cartridges
  • If this cartridge was refilled it is possible that the chip has become unset. Please bring the cartridge in and we will reset it for you

It's streaky/Doesn't print

  • Make sure that all tape has been removed from the cartridge. Yellow vent tape if the cartridge is new, or black tape covering the ink pad if the cartridge has been refilled
  • Try printing a test page, as this will identify the problem cartridge
  • Make sure that no cartridges are empty. Please note that a cartridge may run out of ink before the chip says it's empty as it just counts the pages not the real ink level. If you notice that the liquid ink tank at the back is empty, it's time to replace/refill your cartridge
  • If no cartridges are empty, try running a cleaning cycle on your printer.
  • Remove the cartridges from the printer and make sure that there is no caked on ink on the bottom of the cartridges' ink pad. If you notice any ink buildup, place a few drops of windex on the ink pad to clear away any blockage.

Toner Printers

*If you are in a rush for toner, try shaking the toner cartridge to level out the power inside. This trick should allow you to print that one last page.

It won't fit

  • Make sure that all packaging has been removed (there may be up to 3 parts to pull off, including tape that you have to pull out of the cartridge by a tab at the side)
  • Check that your drum isn't attached to your old toner. The drum is what holds the toner inside the printer, and sometimes it comes out with the old toner as one piece
  • The roller should face towards the back of the printer. Make sure you haven't put it in upside-down or backwards

It won't register

  • Remove the toner and make sure that there is no dust/dirt on the chip then reinstall the toner
  • Sometimes the chip doesn't line up correctly the first time the cartridge is installed. Try removing and reinserting the cartridge a few times.

It's streaky

  • When toner cartridges are nearly empty they will leave streaks down the page. It could be time for a replacement
  • Make sure there aren't any dings on the roller, as if it has any damage it will leave spots or weird marks on the page
  • You may need a new drum. Usually your printer will notify you by saying "replace drum"
  • Try running a cleaning cycle on the printer
